Why bother, when a public review will attract far more attention (not to mention, hopefully, improvements).

The Red Lion is still a good place to meet but that's about it. I haven't eaten there in years (why bother when there are half a dozen far better places to eat nearby). But really, a pub at the centre of a World Heritage Site that can't even bother to maintain locks, or basic standards of hygiene, in its toilets? What sort of message is that sending out to the national, let alone the international, visitor?

I don't take the place that serious, it's a watering hole in my favourite place, i always cook my own food in my van anyway, i'd rather spend my money on fuel for travel, plus i'm a very simple eater.

Personally i like the staff, but then again i have taken the time to get to know them.

Better food at the Waggon, yeah, but i'm usually too pissed to walk to the waggon when i'm hungry. ; )

I have to say that I have always got on well with the staff at the RL as a customer without getting to know them further than that. It appears no different to me then any other pub of its type that are one minute quiet, the next rushed off their feet, especially at weekends or on special occasions. I eat there every time I visit and have found the food of a good quality no matter what I choose. To be honest how it presents itself is not top of my list when I visit Avebury as long as I can get a drink and food then get back out to what really is important to me. On the other hand, if I was taking the missus out to dinner then I would take her somewhere much more geared up for personal waiter service and more suitable surroundings for that paticular occasion.

Not sure what 'knowing' or 'liking' the staff at the Red Lion has to do with the quality of the food served there, or the state of the lavatories (though I suppose there might be some connection ;-) I 'know' several people on the Council here but that doesn't stop it from failing to deliver on some basic civic amenities.

Whether anyone finds the food at the Red Lion acceptable or not is down to personal taste - literally. Having to queue separately for fifteen minutes or more for a hot drink after queuing for the same length of time for something from the bar, however, is pure bad management.

The lavatories at the Red Lion should be cleaned several times a day during busy periods, and a lock fitted to the single cubicle in the gents. Considering the Red Lion pub is at the centre of a World Heritage Site it really needs to pull its socks up (though I agree with those who say sitting outside with a pint and watching the world go by at the Lion isn't half bad). You can complain/comment directly to the pub's landlady (Kirsty Ayre on 01672 539266) or to the pub's owners (Green King [email protected] ) if you think the pub can, and should, do better.

As for Green King... they should have kept to what they do best - brewing a decent ale (Green King) and a superlative one (Abbot) and selling it locally - neither travel very far very well.
