That man doing the newsnight piece was a bit of a muppet really. It was a bit like if Alan Partridge had been doing it (human sacrifice? crusties? 'I'm the last journalist in here' etc.) Now if they'd sent down Jeremy Paxman, that would have been a different interview, surely.

On the film, about 9:57, it looks like the tunnel branches at right angles?? or was I just misunderstanding. I thought it was just one tunnel in and out.

The 1960s Atkinson/BBC tunnel does branch out into smaller, lateral tunnels that were dug at the same time. Looking at the sheer size of the tunnels and trying to imagine the amount of original Neolithic building material that has been taken out of Silbury over the decades (and dumped who knows where) is stomach churning.

The only positive feeling I had after watching the program was one of awe that Silbury is still standing. If the old lady can survive all this she can survive anything - truly a marvel of prehistoric engineering and an enduring spiritual statement in our landscape.
