Silbury Hill 180

The artist's eye filters out the things that s/he doesn't want the viewer to see and emphasises stuff of importance. I do it all the time in my work. The photographer doesn't have this luxury so easily. True, there is photoshoppery to be done and one can change lenses, focal length and stuff, but an artist can do it innately. Stukeley was a skilled artist and sought to tell a story of the landscape down there in his work.

As Picasso says: 'Art is a lie that helps us realise the truth.'

As Picasso says: 'Art is a lie that helps us realise the truth.'

But whose truth? When Stukeley elongated the shape of the Sanctuary to make it a snake's head he was using 'Art as a lie to make us realise HIS truth'!

On a lot of the pics I've seen, the steep Silbury was deliberate, as other features weren't distorted.
