Silbury Hill 180

>Stukely often instructed his engravers to squash a scene to make it fit a page. His drawings in the Bodlean show he sketched them quite wide. Maybe this explains the perkiness of Silbury in some drawings?<

A simple and excellent explanation - many thanks!

The artist's eye filters out the things that s/he doesn't want the viewer to see and emphasises stuff of importance. I do it all the time in my work. The photographer doesn't have this luxury so easily. True, there is photoshoppery to be done and one can change lenses, focal length and stuff, but an artist can do it innately. Stukeley was a skilled artist and sought to tell a story of the landscape down there in his work.

As Picasso says: 'Art is a lie that helps us realise the truth.'
