Silbury Hill 180

The Duke of Northumberland in 1776 was on a treasure hunt to furnish Syon House and Allnicked Castle.

Dean John Merewhether and the Arch Inst in 1849 were trying to find proof that supported traditional Christian belief as it was at that time.

The BBC were in it for sensational TV, and Atkinson and others were in there for dosh and reputation as is confirmed by the lack of a report/ the state of the archive/ leaving the entrance spoil all over the site for 18 months and the eventual inadequate backfill.

To suggest getting Silbury back to some former state is the argument likley to be exploited by those who propose to re-excavate the tunnels and they wish to put it in a way that the public would endorse (because of the budget required).

They are no different in my mind to those that have gone before.

But what do I know / I am daft enough to have suggested a poem competition...(on anover thread)...

Yes. Once you equate "my agenda" with "treasure" you can say every intervention into Silbury has been for the same reason and none has ever been for the simple and sole benefit of Silbury. It's quite an indictment when you look at it that way.

The main thing here is that you could end up with Wiltshire's answer to Newgrange and Knowth. Newgrange is now a monument to one man's interpretation of how the site might have looked at one instant in it's very, very long history. Knowth is a bastardisation of how it looked during many phases of its use.
