Callanish '06

close

Got to wondering how many from TMA will be in Callanish next year for the Lunar Standstill. I can arrange for a crate of premium-grade sake to be there for the 'moon viewing' of a lifetime. Appropriate music, dance and poetry contributions of course always appreciated :-)

I'll be there at some stage, but it's not really one date is it. I'm hoping to avoid the crowds if possible so that the circle is relatively clear of people drinking cheap lager etc.

I'm a distinct possible. If I am there, it'll be with my mum!

What dates is that going to be?

Well, I'm gonna be there THIS year, so there! ;o)

I might scope it out for next year - dunno if I fancy being there when it's so hectic, but it COULD be fun...

Gotta try and work out an itinerary so I can work out when I'm gonna be on the islands...

Hoorah!

Who owns Callanish? Or, more to the point, who has the authority to close it or restrict access. Is it Historic Scotland or do they just manage it on someone else's behalf.

If it's HS they may see this as a potential money earner and limit spaces via ticket sales or the like. Alternatively, if public interest in this grows as it well might, there may be one or more of the "good" nights where they close the site completely to the public to allow a film crew in.

If this happens, it may not be too much of a spoiler as the old (pre-visitor centre) carpark is at the end of the avenue where you'd want to be so views might still be ok.

However, if you really want to be on site it might be worth checking out local knowledge of likely changes to access arrangements before finally fixing on a date.

Just a thought.

Me n mine have plans to take the caravanananavan to Lewis in 2006. It's been on my itinery since I was small, I planned to see the eclipse too (that didn't happen...) We won't get there till the end of july, however.... did I read somewhere that it's okay till september?

Could do with a trip to Avebury. Have been so depressed recently.
