there's a few examples where this happens, but this could be the best example I've seen.

Some theories have the peck outline getting done first, then grinding down the rest to the correct depth. But I think it's more likely to be continuous bashing, as there are loads of carvings with very visible pecks marks still showing, the smooth ones may just be weathered...
