But many Neolithic enclosures have later burial monuments inside them, as do many sites of later date. Cauewayed enclosures containing Bronze Age barrows include well-known examples such as Robin Hood's Ball, Windmill Hill, and Knap Hill. The only way a cairn or barrow could offer a clue to the dating of the enclosure is if there is a direct physical relationship - one overlapping or cutting into the other. Even then it's not always clearcut - look at the debate over the relationship between Conquer Barrow and the henge bank at Mount Pleasant, Dorchester.

MJB, thanks for the book reference, I'll follow it up.
The site is well worth a visit, if you've got the energy. The obvious and easiest way to create a bank up on Carrock Fell is by doing exactly what they did - use the rocks on the summit. Digging any ditch would have immediately unearthed boulders. I did get an impression that the site could be Neolithic, but information is scarce.
