As is the case with many monuments in the Lakes marked as "cairn" in gothic lettering on the OS maps, walkers have rearranged the stones to provide wall shelters, or they have been scattered. This is the case with the cairns on Carrock Fell. Also, part of the south wall has been built into some form of sheepfold.

Other examples of cairns been made into shelters in the Lakes are Selside Pike (NY 490 111), Low Raise (NY 456 137), and Seatallan (NY 138 084).
