One small addition which may open up another line of research.

According to Rodney Castleden in "Neolithic Britain", the site was originally known as "The Whirl Stones".

There's the suggestion that Roman Leominche runs by it and Roman Mediomanum sits on it + Mucklestone area + Bradling Stone, Norton-in-Hales, + "Bearstone" (Barley or Ursa?).

And, I quote: "Finger stone possibly ... alignment stone in a henge ...

The idea the Finger quoit is a resite comes from the water marks on it (NSJFS 1965, page 44).
