We just visited this godforsaken place today, when I returned and read about it here I wondered - what if anything has happened on the News story posted here?

Not that I've heard of. There was talk of moving them to the Manor House Museum, but it seems to have gone a bit cold. I'll have a poke around and see if I can find any updates.

Yes the stones are in a poor state and seems to be unvisited apart from a few rock-art folks and people taking their dogs for a s***. As Stubob notes, I remember seeing bits of paint from the fence splattered on the rocks last time I was there too.
Get 'em shifted somewhere safe I reckon.
