English is named for the Angles, of Anglo-Saxon fame.

"Distinctively Geordie and Northumbrian words are more than 80 % Angle in origin, compared to standard English, where the figure is less than 30 %. Modern English words by comaprison are predominantly of Latin origin because modern English derives from the dialects of southern England which were continuosly influenced by the Latin and Norman French favoured by the educated classes of Oxford, Cambridge and London."

Summat like that. I wish someone would tell her tutor that! Bloomin monkey...

Now THAT'S language for ya. ;o)

Ah, but by your own quote Tombo the history of the English language has to take in all influences on the language, whether it's named after the Angles or not….

The fact that "Geordie and Northumbrian words are more than 80 % Angle in origin" when compared to speakers of common English for the majority of the language's life and the majority of the country actually EMPHASISES the difference between Geordie English and the English language itself.

What's a '<B>comaprison</B>' BTW - the part of a penal establishment where they keep the geordie contingent? :oP (Tee-hee – I love below the belt typo-digs!!!)
