Think I first went to Avebury on my way back from the world hide and seek championships at Stonehenge c.1990ish.

As Paul says, Avebury is great - but Kilmartin is every Stone Hopper's dream come true! First and only time I've been there was 2001 with a group of about 10 others. We just spent the week clarting around and soaking the place up. Amazing!

Heh! Now I know what you're on about, but you just conjured up some highly amusing mental images of Keystone Cops and Druids doing a Benny Hill fast-forward routine around the trilithons.

For me, first visit to Avebury was ruined by a combo of wasps and tourists, but that gave rise to determination to get the place to myself, which resulted in spending a whole week there in the Teacher's Cottage a few years ago. So I'm not complaining.

If forced to choose between Avebury and Kilmartin, I'd probably eventually go for the latter. Avebury, for all it's astoundingness, has little in the way of carvings. But there is something about Fyfield that is a large part of Avebury's attraction for me. Not just the cup-marks and pollisoir, but the broodingly sessile wildness of those feral sarsens.
