Yeah, that's the one. He theorises that the stones were chosen because they are shaped like faces, or are carved into the shapes.

Looks like quite an interesting book, although I don't hold with the "faces" idea, personally. However, there is one of the stones that bears a striking resemblance to Kenneth Williams! So who knows? ;)

I disagree, Goff, it doesn't look like an interesting book at all. In JaneWorld it looks like a pile of kaka-baba-shite!

Homo sapiens are evolutionarily programmed to see faces in stuff. We see them in clouds, in washing-up bubbles, in the pattern on a carpet, in the uneven surface of a great stone. I love the fact that you see the marvellous face of the late, great Kenneth Williams in one of the stones, Goff. Genius.

I better "Stop messing about..." or Terence Meaden will be thinking "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"

Whilst I agree with you in principle, Avebury does seem to have a large proportion of anthropomorphic/simulacra stones compared to anywhere else I've seen. It does make me wonder if they were deliberatly chosen.

Nah, Squid, it's just that we've looked at them more and we're familiar with the patterns and shapes.

Aw, I was only trying to be "nice"! ;)

I dunno - there's a lot of stones there, so the chances of seeing a related shapes in a number of the stones, I guess, is quite probable... I was talking to Hob about this, and can't remember the scientific term for it, but as Jane says, there is summat inherent in the human mind that will try to make these shapes real. Or summat.

Look at the clouds, for example - there's all manner of shapes you can make out in those buggers! ;) And trees, hills, bushes, shadows, and so on...
