Man , that historian gadgee had some major haemorroid thang brewing.
My nana is 92 and she calls the 'good old days' a load of shite. Her mam had 15 kids, 4 of which died before they were 2 because they lived in a shitty situation..... Just an example.
The geezer who's house had no running water and the thatch leaked and ting ("and we'd still be there today")
What i'm trying to say in my vodka soaked way is...
the past is the past, and life was hard, maybe communities were stronger but that was because life was hard, people had to pull together (talk to your nanas).
What has happened to Avebury has happened to communities up and down these islands, urban and rural.
At least the villagers got moved to decent housing within their area. Slums are fucking slums, wether they be urban or rural.
I mourn the loss of community but I celebrate the loss of TB, rickets, and the shitty lives working people had to endure.
Maybe the houses were demolished because they were slums. Maybe the houses were demolished because they inhibited access and appreciation of a unique site.
That was then............It should be documented true......but tone down the rosey specs...

I totally agree. Most of the old dears were children at the time anyway, and when you think of your own childhood you're mostly not even aware of how the adults round you are thinking. They were really commenting on the time as adults living in today's society? Not to detract from their experiences, but..
Also they were talking about the lost community spirit but I bet there were the same feuds and affairs and unpleasantness you'd find in any community at any time in history. AFter the war the whole country changed because of the loss of the agricultural way of life.
Anyway I did think it was interesting because I didn't really know the story (despite being round the museum before) and I didn't realise how much reconstruction had gone on.

I wonder what people's reactions would be if the NT wanted to excavate and put up the remaining stones?

True, in part. Rose glasses allround sofar as doc. was concerned but given what we "know" now would we do differently. Imagine a hypothetical newly found site with international importance, basically intact but situated beneath a rather run down settlement and with huge funds (in our dreams) to excavate, restore, what would we do differently now? With so many pressure groups, would anything at all get done while the site gently detioriated? With hindsight one can criticize Keiller but he possibly saved Avebury from a fate earlier documented by Stukely. P.S. I was there on May eve (quiet) but fabulous morning, very battery charging. Jimit :-)
