As is generally well known, The New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton – the venue for ‘Cabbage Sunday’ since its inception – is now only operating as a B&B establishment, and has closed as a public house - at least while it remains with the present owners.
I have recently spoken to all those people who have been involved with organising ‘Cabbage Sunday’.
With the number of people attending having declined in recent years, and with the need to find an alternative venue no-one, who has been involved with the organisation of the event feels that they can commit themselves to the extra work involved to keep ‘Cabbage Sunday’ going.
If, on the other hand, anyone wishes to take up the challenge, or who would simply be willing to help with the organisation, they would be more then welcome – please ring Nita on 01672 539368 to discus details; if asked, I would be prepared to continue to act as auctioneer on the day.
If no–one is prepared to take up the challenge, clearly the event will not take place. This would of course, seriously effect the finances of the Avebury & District Over 60’s Club (the main recipients of the proceeds) and of course, the usual donation made to the Wiltshire Blind Association, would not be possible either.

So much bad news in a single thread, let alone in a single village.

I've seen Addington suffer the same fate, the closing of the PO/shop in the late 70's, one of the oldest pubs in the country now no more than a restaurant that grudgingly serves beer to locals, and the exodus of the children, followed by their parents, leaving half-million pound houses, full of people who don't know each other. I used to play for the cricket club, along with 10 or so residents, now there is a single local player in the whole club. The AmDram society would be sold out three nights running, twice a year, now nothing. The pub would be packed all weekend with locals, now I don't know anyone in there.

If this is progress, I want to regress.
