On the other hand, hanging over this particular village is the fact NT owns most of it combined with their published medium term aim to ban all vehicles from there.... At least, that's what I understood. Has anyone any details?
I don't doubt that this is an issue, but even if you removed the NT from the equation, I'm certain you'd be left with a middle-class dormitory village with littl in the way of local community or industry. The country's full of them. Ironically, I suspect the NT and all the issues surrounding Avebury have helped glue the community together up until now. But then I don't know much of the background, so I'm probably talking rubbish!

Well I reckon if pure economics was ruling what happens in Avebury then given the amount of visitors it gets there's room for several more restaurants, a Pagan museum, a Crop Circle cafe, an Art shop and several more antiques shops. Look how Glastonbury and Tintagel cater for their visitors. Not that I particularly want it to turn into a tourist trap but I somehow doubt if the dominant landlord will allow it, so I reckon there's more going on than mere rural decline! The biggest amount of trapping tourists is by NT themselves.
