FRom memory I thought these were the secondary remains buried after the ambush of the Great Danish Host by the Wiltshire Militia on Boxing Day 1006, but I admit to being preoccupied when reading that material as it demonstrated that Marlborough DIDN'T exist at that time because if it had then the old Roman road that was later reopened to link Marlborough to the northn wouldhave carried traffic and the Host who were looking to head south would have taken that route. The very fact that the Wilts militia knew they could ambush at Kennet also demonstarted they knew the Host were making for the only known reliable river crossing upstream of Newbury.
