Yeah, but what's a 'serious' pagan? I mean I feel a spiritual connection with these places and an intuitive leaning towards native celtic spirituality, but I wouldn't brand myself as a "serious pagan". But I do like to turn up at Avebury during the larger festivals and mix with a bunch of similarly inclined people. The problem isn't the "serious pagans" or the "weekend pagans" or the "hippies" or any other sub-group you care to slap a label on - it's the usual minority of idiots that will inevitably get attracted to any 'alternative' event once it exceeds a certain size. I've no idea what the solution is, but it's a shame that one can't be found that accommodates all concerns.

Bring back the Stonehenge free festival...

Yeah, I agree. I'm not a serious pagan, or a serious anything really, but I enjoy being at Avebury for the various 'pagan' festivals, as well as being there when nothing's happening at all. Dunno why really, m'be it's just seeing folks having a good time without all the usual social/religious restrictions you get elsewhere. Can understand the locals getting a bit pissed off with the drums and fire eaters etc but the stones were there long before the village; it's a World Heritage Site after all and one of the few big places in the country where you can enter and follow your beliefs without hassle (and don't get charged for doing it). Reckon it should stay that way.

Doktoratomik,

I agree, I have slapped a label on a minority, but I think we have both come to the same conclusion - the minority tag on, cause trouble, and spoil it for the people who are serious about their beliefs.

Cheers,
TE.
