Goffik ,I have a book dated 1829, The Celtic Druids, and it has five maps of well different spellings?
The first is of Abury, and is almost face shaped, this also shows the two Avenues, with theKennet avenue passing through west kennet and terminating in a large spiral, the other one passes beckhampton and then just fades out.
The next plan is of the temple of abury, and looks more round.
It lists the dates when certain stones were removed, some by a Tom Robinson in 1700, some by 1712 and then again in 1720.
The next one turns back into a face shaoe, and says it was as surveyed in 1812.
The next one is an artist impression of what they assumed it was origonnaly.
The last one is called Abiri, and is back to being circuler, but with the Kennet avenue been shown terminating at what is called Overton hill with a double row stone circle there.
When you read through the book, written by Godfrey Higgins he goes into great detail as to its shape, and says that the earlier Stukley plates were obviosly not surveyed correctly.
He also goes into great detail of the number of stones, all there positions and measure.
He measured and surveyed Overton hill ( the sanctuary) and laments farmer green, who he said took half the stones in 1724 to his buildings at Beckhampton
He describes in great detail and lists all the stones of Beckhamton avenue, and tells of the great number of barrows along its length and where it terminates, in what he describes as a most solem and awfull place.
