Megameet Picnic

close

Anyone up for a Megameet Picnic in Avebury during the summer? Totally informal, just turn up with food and drink, chat with others (or not). A short sound-blast on your favourite Megatopic if you want :-)

Top of Waden Hill overlooking Silbury might be a good place as it's off the tourist track and only about 30 minutes walk from the main Avebury car park (half that from the Avenue). There's a photo of the spot at http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6094/1623/400/Silbury%2024.jpg Windmill Hill might also be a good place, though a bit further to go (and a bit more windy :-)

Could let the Portal people and the Stones List folks know as well - just a thought, could be fun.

Definitley count me in! Just the excuse I need to browse to Ryanair.com :)

Yep - love to.

Far too busy what with the Durrington Walls dig in its 3rd year and at least 4 digs around Avebury and the begining of the Silbury debacle, sorry rescue plan, and the massive Stonehenge thi (I don't think I should ave said that!)

Saturday 24 June?

I never had you down as a dastardly type, Littlestone, but honestly - you wait until I go out of the country and then call a gathering of the Clan? Low, my friend, very low...... :-)

I hope it comes off: it sounds great - I will be there in spirit, anyway (I do a very good ethereal gatecrasher impersonation). Personally, I think Windmill Hill would be the better choice.

Peace

Yup! Count me and me good lady in, mate.

Just give us a date to put in the diary....

Cheers
Dave

Everyone welcome then?

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread for a date, see if we can make a visit coincide. I like the idea of picnicking on Waden Hill (or Windmill Hill).

Debating showing this to Loie...

Just to confirm that a few folks from here, the Stones List and the Megalithic Portal are getting together for an informal picnic at Avebury from around noon on Saturday, 5 August. This is a totally informal gathering of like-minded souls so just turn up and join in (or not join in) as the whim takes you. If you want to sound off for 5 minutes or so on your favourite stony subject I'm sure no-one will mind too much.

We thought the best place for the picnic would be in the north-east sector of the Avebury circle, a little east from the two stones that form the Cove, and roughly within the red circle that you'll find at -

For those who don't know Avebury, the Cove is close to the Red Lion Pub (to which we can retreat if the weather turns bad ;-) and about ten minutes from the Stones vegetarian restaurant, museums and National Trust shop. There are a few B&B's in and around Avebury for anyone planning to stay overnight, or there's the campsite at the Barge Inn, Honey Street, Alton Barnes, which is a drive of about twenty minutes from Avebury.

If anyone has more information on local B&Bs, campsites, pubs, restaurants and other interesting places to visit in the area please feel free to post it here.

Littlestone

PS Hope you will turn up Pete; you and I have had plenty of disagreements over the years but I've always respected you intimate knowledge of Avebury and the surrounding area. Same applies to anyone else I've disagreed with over the years. It's fun to have lively, heated debates but life's too short to hold grudges and harbour dislikes for too long. There's a roast chicken and six bottles of premium grade sake on offer - what more can I do :-)

Seven months, how apt be that?
Seven months to map and plot,
Seven months to show the lines,
Seven months to show the ritual routes, how apt,
Seven strides I can take,
King of the world, seven shall be.

My better half and I hope to make it too. It'll be nice to make some new acquaintances in our favourite place.

Megameet is in Wiltshire.
This was treated by the druids as the ground plan of a vast planetarium, or astronomical map.
they laid out the whole range of downs into planetary regions, in which the sun and planets were represented in a meridional line fron north to south- a position from which the ancients believed the planets had started at the beginning , and would return at the end of the world, when they had run their course ( you can guess the year?) if not ask Mike.
The earth itself was represented by sibury hill ; the sun and moon by the great circles of Avebury( that name being a Phoenician word for " the mighty ones ", the ecliptic by the avenues of the serpent.
Just so you know where you are going.

To add a touch of Jolity to the day how about making it Fancy Dress?

I think that a ' Lizards and Croley' theme would be hilarious .... best dressed gets as much free milk as they can handle....

..... sorry, just a thought (must stop laughing at my own jokes)

back to work ;-)

"No, I'm Mike Croley!" "No, I'm Mike Croley!" "No, I'm Mike Croley!"
"No, I'm Mike Croley!" "No, I'm Mike Croley!" "No, I'm Mike Croley!"

Bump :-)

Well, its been called a picnic. So who's bringing what food?

Rock cakes anyone? Stone baked pizza?
Pigs?

It's the 5th of August here, you lovely people. The sun is shining, but it's cold. I have the day off, so I think we are off to see some wildlife of the feathered variety, but my mental moment is monumentally megalithic. Roam if you want to. I hope you have a great day, and the weather is suitably suitable for standing among stones. Have fun.

Love & Peace
