You could say that about any money spent on archaeology/historic buildings/heritage etc. The arts will always lose the argument if they are put in an either/or contest with social welfare/health/education. In my view we need both.

A famous archaeologist whose name I just cannot remember once wrote that "archaeology is of no importance. It is a hobby and I am fortunate indeed to be paid for mine". Well there is a theme for discussion: Is archaeology important or is it just a middle class interest?

Is archaeology important or is it just a middle class interest?

Yes if it gives us an understanding of the past but if in the end it destroys in pursuit of knowledge - no. Something I read on by the chief archaeologist hosting the irish motorway, to vaguely quote cos I can't find it

"We do not use the term destructive archaelogy anymore but "deconstruction", so presumably if people want the stones at Avebury re-erected it becomes constructive archaeology...

Depends on the "archaeology." Historical archaeology? Processual archaeology? Post-processual archaeology? Marxist archaeology? Feminist archaeology? Pick one to debate.

I was just giving a good reason not to spend money on re-erecting Avebury, that's all. Are you saying that the money is better spent on digging up some stones and trinkets?

Of course what I said was very unrealistic and what folks say about spending money on stuff like war-for-oil being of greater importance to those with the purse strings anyway is true. I'd certainly rather see the money spent on re-erecting the stones of Avebury than on bombs etc., but ONLY if that was the only other option for the money.

For a start there are far more important archaeological conservation projects that need the money that would be spent on 'rebuilding' Avebury. Avebury is stable and maintained - so many others are in grave danger of being lost. Their problem is that Avebury's a high profile site and would get preference if the money was available.

Art? What you need to do is invent a 150 inch plasma screen that's dirt cheap (and green) to manufacture. Then you could give everyone one, digitise every painting out there and make them avaiable so that folks can have any picture in their living room whenever they wanted. Then you could warehouse all the art and use the galleries for homes for orphans. You could even burn the painting in a power station and turn them into energy to power the big screens.

Next job tactile 3D projectors so you can do the same with sculpture!
