On the beach in Cornwall I've seen "sea frits" (is that the term?) in which the mist is phospherescent and millions of sparkly bits show, despite it being completely dark.

that is caused by plankton...or acid!

It must have been wonderful. Once, on a boat between the two islands of Malta, I saw a shoal of flying fish into which the boat had sailed flashing sunlight in all directions, thousands of them, as they leapt out of our way. Quite glorous, we never forget these things.

I have witnessed phospherescence bright enough to read by on a number of occassions whilst at sea. The best I ever saw was off Senegal, it was late at night and a number of us were on deck enjoying our favourite brand of local cigarettes. All of a sudden the boat was surrounded by a bright electric blue light coming from the sea, it just came on as if someone had flipped a switch and it became as bright as day. The whole thing lasted for about 5 minutes and then ended as suddenly as it started.
