I was dodging thunder & lightening to catch a few glimpses of the eclipse.

Anyone else see any of it?

Newcastle cloudy and overcast last night - gallery of images here - http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/eclipses/gallery_27oct04.html - but nobody has pictured the significant moon rises / moonsets from Avebury, ever. Nearest happening is about April next year, and then the end of September. That 28.30 ish declination 'line', which is close to the Winter Solstice points.

I *did* buy a protractor and have been working with one southerly alignment. If a stone is of a reasonable size, known to have been re-erected by Keiller and perhaps is barring a supposed sightline then it may be possible to argue that it has been placed in the wrong spot. I've not found the list of stone numbers yet but one of the uprights in the row does appear to be possibly back to front and probably about a foot out of line. (It's not a lot).

The next day when this line may be tried out is Tuesday 16th, of this month, at moonrise, roughly ten in the morning. It's a young moon - just four and a bit days old - so not the easiest object to spot in the sky. The view point is around where the NT webcam was sited, looking down the 'Z-feature'. The moon will rise from behind Waden Hill but where exactly? Perhaps the trees will block the view. These Z-stones should probably be named 'The Avebury Stone Row'. The moon is better disposed at the moment toward showing southerly moonsets - at four or five days after the full.

The only Avebury alignment mentioned by Thom is the speculative one to Deneb (+36) made by the centres of the two inner circles and framed by a large rock on the perimeter to the north. This may be disputed - alignments originating at circles rather than crossing them (etc).
