What I'm getting at is how do we know that there were not several types of horned god.

I'm pretty sure the main horned god of my part of Yorkshire had goaty horns, but I know of other types of horned images being found in the region - rams horns for example. I am of the opinion that these are two different god images for two different gods.

Yes I see what you mean. The ram symbolises the leading of the herd. This was used to depict christ and has commonality with horned gods being sacrificial beasties. Regional and chronological differences in horned depictions usually maintain some of the same unconscious qualities tho, just a matter of reducing it down I guess.

There's a difference between goat's horns and ram's horns, yes. But there's surely more similarities between them than qualities separating them.

What are the ram's horns images to which you refer?
