Rothiemay 2?

close

Does anyone know if the circle about 4km to the SSE of the Rothiemay circle (the one in The Modern Antiquarian and on this site, although with no posts) has a name, or should it just be "Rothiemay 2"? It is just as impressive as the circle in TME, and the position in the landscape is better (I think). Also, between the two (about 2km SSE of the first Rothiemay site), there is a huge cup and ring marked stone - is this the remains of a third circle (it would be very large but the other stones in the field seem "placed")? Any ideas? I'll post pics etc of recent visit when I've got some idea!

Don't think I've got an answer but there are some other circles shown here that aren't on TMA yet :

So, wondered if it's either of the 2 nearest to Rothiemay?

I think the stone circle you mean is Arnhill Stone Circle. There are two photos on page 104 of the Modern Antiquarian. Is there much left there? It looks interesting to me.

found some info on the "third" site, it is the Avochie Stone - I've added a site and pics, fieldnotes to follow. It doesn't feature in TMA and only gets a short paragraph it the Rothiemay circle section of Aubrey Burl's SS of Britain... book. He seems to think that it's a ruined circle - if the scattered stones in the field are anything to go by, it would be HUGE, dwarfing anything else in NE Scotland. There is certainly a vague circle of stones that seem placed and fallen.
If anyone has any more info on this site, please let me know!
