Bathampton Down?

oops it's the other side of the university. hope it was a nice day...

Do you know where the cats and dogs rescue centre is? It's on the road out towards the American Museum, past the sports fields. If you go down there, past the entrance to the dogs home, there are a couple of paths on the left. If you follow those you get to the right fields. Some of the stones are in the unfenced grassy bits, the big upright stone is in a fenced off area with a stile to get in by. The grid ref is probably about ST780642. If you follow the public footpath north then you eventually go past some nice caves too.

Perhaps it counts as Claverton Down (oops) but there's a lot on the top there, earthworks, barrows and such and i've seen it refered to as Bathampton Down in books.

That made I larf !

That'll teach me for not following the map ref you posted to TMA. I pondered heading over there, but spent so long walking up and down the hill on the other side...
My fault entirely.
Annoyingly they aren't marked on the orange OS map.

One thing I did see however were the 2 large recumbant slabs in front of the social science block. Kinda too regular shaped to be natural.

P.S. It was a gorgeous day :)

I live in Batheaston (at the Bottom of Solsbury Hill) and my morning walk to work takes me across the vale to Bathampton. I often look up to the down and I had no idea that there were standing stones up there I until read this thread. I will have to take a look.

I'm quite lucky to have such a pleasant walk to work.
