I'm going to pop over to st mary's in the next few weeks, it's somewhere i've yet to go in these islands [ along with the other end the shetlands ] as i was very much a stone circle guy [the other places were normally on the way to one of those for me], so scilly never really came up for me, but as i'm so close and everytime i see it, it calls to me, i'm going over and wondered if anyone has any advice or information of interest about the place?

I did St Mary's a few years ago, but all my postings on the topic seem to have been lost in the Great Cull - one reason I don't post much here any more. All the sites are listed here on TMA though.

Basically, from the airport I headed into town and up the hill, then went round the coast path (clockwise) to take in most of the major sites. There's a brief sojourn 'inland' for a standing stone, but most of the biggies are on the path.

It's about 7 miles or so right round, I did it in a day.

Hi Mr B,

You can see loads in a day - we've been on the ferry a few times. The first time I think we had a bit longer, but we saw all of the sites featured in Craig Weatherhill's Cornovia (do you have that?)

We walked around the island clockwise, started off with the Harry's Walls standing stone, then on to Bant's Carn (fab), Halangey Down (busiest site of the day, but it was June), Long Rock standing stone, Lower Innisidgen, Innisidgen (both of these are top drawer), Porth Hellick Down and The Great Tomb (also fab), finished off at Buzza Hill, icecream in Hugh Town.

On other trips we've been to see the Deep Point cairns and the Giant's Castle fort and Salakee Down (tombs are overgrown in summer). The sculpted granite on Penninnis Head is truly amazing.

You should have a great time!

By the way, the main (red) roads on the OS map are really just leafy country lanes, so you can take fairly direct routes along them without worrying about being mown down.

Glad to see you got over to St Marys, looks like you had a brilliant day for it. The lower vegetation is worth having as well, those sites all look much better when the stones are out in the open. Did you go on the ferry?
