Round fields

close

From Moel ty Uchaf, I looked down upon Tyfos, two miles away. Through the haze I was surprised to see a round field next to the cairn circle.

Any thoughts?

It would certainly be worth asking at the farm about it. It's definitely round and it's definitely round for a reason.

I love spotting these. They usually denote raths or ringforts in ireland and they are quite common here. However, I have spotted one or two that don't seem to be. Half circular detours in field wals are my fave. There's one in the middle of the four stone circles at Grange near Cong in Mayo ... a fifth circle? could be.

There is another in the Dargle valley in co. Dublin that I need to scramble down and look at, which has huge boulders forming the walls.

Yours has to be worth checking out with the locals. It looks great.

There's a round field near us, just to the south Ysbytty Cynfyn. My Dad spotted it looking down into the valley from Dolgamfa. Not sure what it represents though. Being unimaginative, I thought it was just a round field.

There is a great round field in the West Looe Valley in Cornwall, just above the Giants Hedge and not too far from Hall Rings. It has a stone wall all around it and I had thought that it must be Iron age in origin. However a local historian of great repute has told me it is a medieval rabbit warren. That dosent mean it is not built on a previous fort though does it.....

Perhaps the locals used to enjoy a game of cricket.
