Have to agree on the Mesolithic hunter gatherer lifestyle having little impact on the landscape. There's even evidence from Neolithic bones that the hunter gatherers had a better, more balanced diet than the early farmers. Though i think i read in one of Francis Lynch's books that he thought they made 'clearings' to attract animals to a convenient place to be killed, rather than roaming all over after the herds (makes sense really i suppose ,saves energy expenditure).
I'm not gonna argue the toss about proto feminist societies, you've both done a masterful job on that, though i don't think there's much evidence for or against to be honest. I'm not sure the female 'figurines' can be construed as evidence for or against. Various recent interpretations make them out to be prehistoric porn (though not sure on that one either). Maybe they were just lucky 'charms' to help females through the hazards of childbirth ?

I totally agree on the Mesolithic spin! The rest is up to interpretation or conjecture.

The best idea about clearings I have heard is as follows ...

The folks way back then had to create a home base to stay in and go a-hunter-gathering from. The image most people have of them being permanently on the move is wrong. When then returned to these clearings a year or two later they noticed that these clearing were now occupied by young juicy sapplings, which attracted deer etc, because the new leaves were within reach. So, naturally some clearings started to be made just for this purpose.

There is some evidence that some of these clearings may have been deliberately cultivated so that thorns and brambles populated the perimeters. This implies an actually trap so that animals could be lured in and caged up.

Farming may have started earlier than we all think!
