St Helen's church

close

I am a descendant of Sir Edmond De'Erle and the name later became Darley his descendant John became Lord of the manor and I read that he is thought to have been a Knight of the Templar. This is based on a transept window that bears a Lamb and Flag which was thought to be a symbol of the order. I am fascinated by the Goddess (Sheila-Na-Gig), standing stones etc. that you speak of on this site. Are there any pictures of these that could be posted? I am a lover of nature and feel very connected to these ancient lovers of the land and the goddess. I would enjoy any information you are willing to share with me.

Hey up,

and I'll sort you a few pictures out of St. Helens church.

nice one
stu.

As for Sheela-na-gigs ... they're all almost certainly of 12th century origin (maybe 10th if you push it) and almost certainly have nothing to do with 'The Goddess'.

Don't get me wrong. Sheelas are fantastic things. Unfortunately they (and the church) fall outside the remit of The Mod ant due to their recent age. However, here's one or two:

Well four. I must get to some of the others.

Good sources for Sheelas:

"Images of Lust" by Weir and Jerman

"The Witch On The Wall" by Anderson (I think)

&

"Sheela-na-gigs of Ireland and Britain" by Jack Roberts and someone else (I have lent this to someone so don't have it to hand - therefore not 100% on title either)

very good website with pictures of churches in the Uk that have the lovely lady carved on them.

Definately a Pagan Symbol, but no goddess!!

I'm rather impressed with DarleyAncestor offering sherry each time s/he posts. Very civilised! I'll pass on the sherry, but a pint would be good.
