"Definately a Pagan Symbol"

Sorry, there's no evidence for that statement. They are all (probably) too new to be so.

Is this a pagan symbol?

Just because Sheelas are female and unexplainable against today's ideas of Christianity doesn't mean they are pagan.

By the way, I would love somebody to *prove* that they are pagan in origin, but all the people who have tried have failed.

How times change eh. How marvellous to be able to carve such rude things and stick them on a church. I can't imagine what the current worshippers at those churches must think. Perhaps they keep their eyes down.

:o(

I am wrong and am happy to say that.... I was always under the impression they were Pagan. But I'm obviously not aswell read as your good self... I bow before your knowledge... and will read up on the subject...

:o(

Rather nice thou, I have some in my house.

i dunno much about Sheela-na-gig's, but always assumed they were pre-Christian. is that not the case? Is there evidence that they definitely date from christian times? Because if it's a grey area, and it could be either, then common sense would tend to shy away from idea that christianity would ever use such imagery (even in the early days).

As i say though; i know sod-all about it... but if the jury's out, then i'll put my money on "pre-Christian" ;-)

Four winds,
I will visit your sites as soon as I get a chance. I am open to all possibilities. I am delighted with the responses and anxious to explore new ideas.
