There are reports of a basal excavation in the 70's but I can't find any subsequent reports. When I was there I was struck by how its height would have been about right to support a slightly lower ceiling beam. Given the apparent age of the existing building structure it's quite possble it was transported from another site in the area..........how many other menhirs just disappeared?

That report says they dug down 26 feet to find the base of the menhir.
Call me suspicious, but i'm not sure I believe that!

Theres certainly no date and pastscape can only muster "it looks like a prehistoric standing stone".

God knows where "5000 years old" comes from. The pub marketing dept I shouldnt wonder.
