That sounds like the most plausible explanation to me. They had a ready supply of suitable stones in the fort's defensive walls.

What about all of the 'cup marks' on the boulders within the fort? I presume that they must be natural.

I reckon on the 'cups' at Carl Wark being natrual.....

Next time you're up that way....go to the eastern tip of the fort.....if you look back across to the west....before the ground becomes really rocky again you can make out two rectangular building platforms.
