I`ve posted the picture of the bird here:

Will you have a look?

baz

First horses, then guinea pigs now birds!

Did you notice if it had a forked tail or not? If not then that would rule out a young red kite (probably wrong area anyway). Other than that it could be a young buzzard but that’s about as far as my knowledge goes. It does look like a juvenile though which won’t make things any easier for you. You really need Brigantesnation to have a look at it, I think he knows about these things.

Oops forgot about the bird in my original posting....

No idea mate

When you said "This always seems to happen to me; I see some wildlife that I can`t identify, then when I look in the book, everything`s different." it could've been me talking....

difficult to tell from that photo baz

it doesn't look like a buzzard to me - they tend to have a light patch around and just above their legs, but then that could just be hidden from that angle. I'd go with a hawk of some kind I think - but definitely not a red kite!

looks very much like a kestrel or sparrowhawk.
difficult to tell without more detail or something to show size.

Couple of people here who know a bit reckon it could be a peregrine (one even reckons female from the colouring).

Other possibilities are still (female again - he sez) sparrowhawk or maybe a Harrier.

All with the proviso that it'd have been easier if it had been flying....

It's a buzzard.
Note the lack of qualification of the statement.
It IS a buzzard.

Thanks for the feedback on this.

After listening to all of the calls, again, the common buzzard is the only one which comes anywhere near to the call that I heard.

baz

it's a Buzzard, and there's *nothing* common about it ;-) Ubiquitous ,please...but never common!

How do I know it's a Buzzard? because of a: it's size, b: it's colouring, c: it's blunt-ish head, and d: the call you described.

A peregrine is a slightly smaller, more slender bird, whose call is rarely heard, and then a rasping 'kak ka kak', at the nest, not whilst hunting.

A red kite's call is a little like a buzzard mewing, but it's tone is different, and the frequency differs to the buzzard. It's the same size as a buzzard yet less bulky, and rarely seen on a rock like that, the usually glide close to the hillside, almost touching the grass.
The only other option is a Goshawk, and I KNOW it's not a goshawk, they are super-rare, in wooded areas, and go "gigigigigigigigiGGIIIIIGIGIGIgigi"

unless they see you, then they're gone.

I miss the buzzards :-( but Morfeticia had an osprey grab a fish while she was swimming a few weeks back, it was 8-10 feet away! Durned water- buzzards!
