Calling 4w's

close

Hey Fourwinds, do you know if the wedge tomb of Moylisha, near Clonegal is called 'Labbansighe' locally? Someone in Carlow said there was a dolmen near Clonegal but I only have map 61 which has nothing marked on it. The nearest thing I can find is Moylisha but can hardly be mistaken for a dolmen by any stretch. There is a reference to it here: http://www.carlowtourism.com/mclonegal.html and since I'm in Carlow this weekend I'd like to find out more.

Any ideas?

What you have to remember is that 'dolmen' means a pile of old stones to many folk. Never ask directions to 'the wedge tomb' when out and about, because most folks won't know what you're on about. Best to ask for the dolmen or giant's grave. I'm always going on about how the word dolmen just shouldn't be applied to any Irish monument, but that's a different story.

Someone could mean Moylisha when they say dolmen it is really the only one that's close. There is also Ballynoe close by :-)
