The find is an 80m diameter double banked henge. It has been known about for a while (one of the opposition groups told the National Museum about it) and is just 100m or so from Rath Lugh. It's been heavily ploughed out and so was only just visible. The initial survey mis-identified it, but the arhaeos have been digging it for a while and have now identified it properly.

The only known Irish henges that are bigger are on Tara itself. I don't know of any double-banked henges anywhere .... (?)

Sounds intriguing , I wonder if it may be a causewayed enclosure , it being on a hill and there is always Donegore so it wouldn't be the first Irish CE or maybe a hybrid CE/H .

... The site is not a double-banked henge, but a double-ringed wood henge dating to 1000bce-400bce according to RC dating.

Excavation has stopped while a descision is made as to whether it is a National Monument or not. If it is deemed so then the motorway route will have to change. Full stop. End of story! (unless they change the law again, but I think this one would be constitutional and so need a referendum.)

The site lies under the entire width of the planned northbound carriageway.
