There are no County Archaeologists as such in Ireland now and Duchas (The Heritage Service) was shut down and merged into another department. The whole of Ireland's Heritage is under threat and in great danger. All the archaeology works along the route are being undertaken by private companies as far as I can see. This sector should never have been allowed to become commercially active IMO.

All of the M3 development proposals went through the proper channels and the proper channels failed the nation!

Many of the Irish folk I've met are fiercly proud of their heritage. Is this a situation lack of information being passed to the people of Ireland? Surely the locals would have kicked up a fuss about it?

The same fate is about to befall EH. I think the idea is to split it between tourism and DEFRA - any known sites with known tourism value will be made into theme parks and sold off to private owners. The remaioning sites, be they known or otherwise will be "massaged" for development - de-listed, forgotten and ultimately lost.

We manged to catch Thornborough from this latter hole and it is good news that even Tarmac now see the value in making out this is a really good site for PR purposes. Maybe soon we will see charging for entrance and completely restricted access.

This tongue in cheek post is probably so close to the truth I will have to be shot for leaking privilaged information.
