I know this is a long shot but is anyone here familiar with the ins and outs of Irish Law regarding a development which will completely destroy a megalithic tomb

This site
http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/1106

Has been earmarked for a new port
http://www.progressivedemocrats.ie/press_room/1616/

At the moment it is in the planning stage but I belive this is in the latter stages and find it very disheartening that the site as well as the surrounding area which is one of the most beautifull stretches of beach on the east coast of Ireland left clean of development can be just bulldozered into the ground.

The firts picture on this link shows were the new development is to be,

The tomb itself is on top of the far cliff which will be the centre of the new development, any help or advice will be most welcome

Hi Mark

This has been mentioned on here by the estimable FourWinds, who I think did a bit of research into it. I can't really remember what we came up with other than that we ran this at the time http://www.heritageaction.org/?page=theheritagejournal&id=16 and it seemed someone (don't know who) was going to challenge it.

I thought summat someone found suggested the prehistoric stuff was safe so HA decided not to pursue it at that time (tho very unhappy with the situation) but I could be wrong/that might've changed.... I'll see if I can find our discussion about it & check back.

Under current Irish law, it would have little to no protection. In 2004, the Minister for the Environment amended the National Monuments Act, to give himself the power to order the damage, sale or destruction of any site of monument in the country if he deems it in "the national interest".

The first photo is a mock-up of what the port will look like. The tombs are somewhere smack-bang in the middle of where they plan to put it.

A local archaeologist is keeping an eye on this and keeping me informed. There is no campaign to stop it as yet.

As if anyone needed a reason not to vote for the PDs this is another one. They fully support this development and when challenged on the doorstep recently by myself and the above mentioned archaeo they quickly changed the subject. I got a shrug of the shoulders when I mentioned the destruction of five 4,500 year old monuments.
