Well (and this is pointless as we're not in the tropics) you'd use a bit of wood with a half inch hole, and a plumb line attached to a twig going across the hole, and if the sun lit up the plumb bob.....

I've just sold a Roman plumb bob, via eBay, to a buyer in the states. I've another one to list. They're both small ones and nobody nowadays would have a clue how to start to use them.

Hypotheses seem to come from nowhere but actually have been stewing away unconsciously for a considerable time. If there are any measurements posted here it will be a first time and, subsequently, a world record!
