You also need it to be completely vertical, which would be practically impossible to verify on such a small scale. Very impressive how close he got though.

Well (and this is pointless as we're not in the tropics) you'd use a bit of wood with a half inch hole, and a plumb line attached to a twig going across the hole, and if the sun lit up the plumb bob.....
