I was just thinking the other day that you'd been a little quiet. Good to see that you & Sprout are still going to the stones.
There are a couple of larger diameter cairns just down the slope from the three marked on the OS map. These are on the valley side. Are these where the ones you mention are?
I have the (sometimes dubious) excavation report if you want to take a look sometime.
Piperstown is an eerie and ugly place at the best of times, close to the city but still quite wild – hillbilly territory. I think the fire was started by some cheeky chappies burning out a robbed car. It exposed the lower cairns that are marked on the map and all the vegetation around them. There are 2 definite mounds that I hadn't noticed before but I don't think they're the ones you mention. They're right beside the marked ones. How extensive was the excavation? I'd like to take a butchers at the report as there's so much goin on on that hill. Is there a map with it?
Yeah, you're right, I haven't got out as often as I would like to. Too many distractions at the moment. I was in west Cork for a wedding recently and didn't even get to one stone circle. Boy was that a frustrating weekend! I was 200 metres away from Reanascreena but didn't have have directions with me. When I got home and checked out here and megalithomania I was raging. I'll give you a shout soon and maybe we'll hook up for a venture…
