Definitely animal as far as I could see, just some tearing up of small patches of grass inside the court area. Unless of course someone was rooting around with a metal detector. It was kind of hard to assess because of the heavy frost on the grass but it looked very superficial.

As for the stone, I wasn't too hopeful about it but thought it was better to ask before it finds a new home in my hermit crab tank.

Well it sounds like an animal rooting through the frost to get to the grass below.

The fact that it was found almost on the surface would lead to to believe
thst it is not what you first thought.... but having said that. We all know
that the tombs held a great reverence to these people and the stones,
so we think have some sort of power. On some tombs(although hard
to see) you might see evidence of some of the stones with cut and chip marks on them,the builders in some cases shaped the stones to a certain design that they must have had in mind. The debatage would
have been gathered up(as even the stone chippings still held some
power) these would have been deposited under/beside stones or
within the tomb itself.

So perhaps this what you have.... of course it might not , but it would
be nice to think so.
