how can you tell something is elaborate from holes in the ground - and mightn't these have been previous structures - not entrances?
All the info is from the post holes . The depth , width and number can only provide an idea of the height , bulk and overall shape to the structure . That is all that can be iferred . Whether they were carved , painted or lintelled is unknown . Stratigraphy explains the chronology , in many cases the posts are in a surrounding ditch if they were previous structures the surrounding ditch would have cut through them . If there was no ditch the fact that the second feature should respect the original would be an indication of relative contemporaneity or extreme chance if repeated elsewhere .

thanks!

the fact that stone structures and timber ones were used at the same time is a new and interesting one - not sure that the evidence makes them elaborate entrances - they could have had a lot of different functions - but it creates interesting thoughts about what what we call the forecourt could have been for
