and, if memory serves, there was no water in them, but there were shallow depressions where they were meant to be.

I hope I'm not thinking of somewhere else....

A dew pond lining needs looking after if it is to continue to hold water - it was considerably drier back then and water would be more scarce than it is now. Puddled clay liner ...

Any idea where they were?

Oh and have you ever found the bank barrow inside the fort?
