Patrcik Mcgill , iirc , mentions that navvies didn't waste the valuable heat when working in winter .
More instant than sticking your hands under your oxters , and less likley to annoy the gaffer .

Hadn't heard of Patrick McGill before. Just looked him up - the 'Navvy Poet' from Donegal. Managed to write poetry with only three years schooling and a life of hard labour.
