"The accommodation simply does not meet the expectations of the modern tourist.”

I realize we've been away way too long, and sincerely apologize. But in researching past lodgings for a project I have in hand, I ran across the above. Have the new owners totally destroyed a place we hold dear?

Any new news would be appreciated.

This made me smile...
Bill Buxton, chairman of Winterbourne Monkton parish council said: “We are a very social village and like to get together. The church and the pub are the only facilities we have so the pub is very important to us.”

I can confirm the building is still as it always has been, went past this morning the 49 bus and looked across - the New Inn sign very visible. There is still a "closed" sticker pasted over the brown road sign for the New Inn (travelling towards Swindon from Avebury).

Thanks to both for the news. I'm just worried that when we next visit, and ask for a big plate of bangers and mash, they're going to try and push asparagus amongst the ferns.

I shouldn't be such an old grouch.

Yours,
Bucky

I spoke to a Winterbourne Monkton resident today. The story is - a builder bought the New Inn about three years ago with the intention of converting it into residential properties. He wasn't able to get planning permission to do this and is required to convert it into B&B Accommodation with a bar. Apparently he is dragging his feet and in no hurry to get the work completed. The New Inn is unlikely to open again as a pub.
