Umm, hello - I'm new about these parts. Having a little look around the forum you all seem pretty lovely so I'm feeling brave enough to post... here goes:

I've just been up to Hetty Pegler's Tump (Glos.) to take photos for a gcse art project type thingy and was wondering if any of you knew of any artists who'd looked at megalithic stuff before?

Ta everso :)

Quick everybody- get him/her!!

(Blaidd - be ready with tea and sympathy given you're the most recent recipient of list initiation).

Hi,
Roger Dean did a lovely lp cover for Yes
which included stones from Avebury & Stonehenge etc.

Is this the sort of thing you meant?

First of all - hello and welcome, Tove :-)

William Blake rendered versions of "Stonehenge" for
Jerusalem:

Sorry Tove, nothing to offer re: enquiry, but I will extend heartiest welcomes.

Welcome to HH Tove.

Sit down, make yourself comfy, while we tie you up and throw eggs at you ... no .. erm ... I mean ... wait for Squid to bake a cake.

one that immediately comes to mind is Constable's ace painting of stonehenge with a rainbow over it:

but if you want something more modern art you could have a look at the megalithically inspired paintings at:

in my humble opinion (I'm currently floundering with an art project myself) pick some pictures you really like and concentrate on them - don't get bogged down by the enormous amount of stuff you'll suddenly realise is out there!

good luck

(got any mini cheddars??)

Hi there, and velcome!

How about a bit of good old fashioned Turner :

Wotcha dude and welcome and all that...
There's a book called 'Standing Stones; Stonehenge, Carnac and the World of Megaliths' by Jean-Pierre Mohen which has got loads of art stuff like paintings and old antiquarian engravings etc. It'a a bit of a tiny book but there's loads in it.
Also John Mitchell's 'Megalthomania' has loads of old drawings etc. too.
Hope this is useful,

Spaceship Mark.

Not so much an artist as a historian type thing & early archeaologist - spelling is not my strong point!!

William Stukely, did quite a few pen & ink type scratchings of some areas, avebury, stonehenge etc. some have argued the accuracy as he tended to expand a little sometimes in the drawings of what he thought may have been there too, but still worth a look.

Books which featuer it are fairly easy to come by, Megalithomania, The Avebury Landscape etc.

Also, have a peep into some old second hand type book shops, they're full of old views of landscapes etc and can usually specialise in certain areas.

Good luck

The visonary artist Mel Haves has been known to draw some wonderful illistrations of Avebury and various cromlechs( but then again i'm biased, i married her)
