I think if I lived in Scotland I would probably force myself to learn, despite the dislike of the idea. There's too much to see that can't be reached otherwise.

I did all the munros lots of corbetts and plenty of archaeo sites before driving .
Driving is handy for work if live in the country and work in the town , but as for getting around , public transport , hitching and a tent /bothies works fine .

I'd get a car if I were you, it's like the internet, it lets you live a bigger life. ;)

If it troubles your conscience keep in mind cars produce 10% of our greenhouse gas but public transport produces 3% and heating & electricity produce 27% - and we each produce nearly 100 times more than Ethiopians do. So there's scope to drive a car and "offset" it by amending your lifetyle in other ways.
