"I'm sure this has been covered on other threads but there's too many to search and almost all the current fieldnotes seem to involve cars..."

Well there is something to be said for owning a car ;) but travel further on the train, there is Bath and Bristol stations to get off at and explore Somerset.
Stoney Littleton long barrow is a lovely walk down the lane and then through the fields up to the barrow. Then I checked for buses and there are only'fare cars' for residents - no good.
What about getting off at Bristol, there is a bus service to Stanton Drew and the stone circle.
Good walking to be had in the Mendips, Nine Barrows, Ashen Barrows and the Priddy henges all very near to each other..not sure about buses but of course there are services to Wells and Glastonbury.

Curiosity killed the cat I know but is it principle that stops you from owning a car?

Thanks for the reply Moss. I mentioned Wiltshire partly because of with cost (Swindon return = cheap) and weather forecast (east = probably drier). I have been to Stanton Drew using buses (not the service to the village itself), Stoney Littleton is definitely on the list, but I haven't got the relevant map for that area.

I don't drive for 80% principle and 10% lack of funds! The other 10% is the likelihood of not actually being very good at driving :)

Just as a somewhat tongue in cheek response: I have a colleague who doesn't drive, we find ourselves being questioned on this really frequently. Similarly with not eating meat. It seems that because it's not "usual", it's a topic of much interest to other people. On occasion, we do wonder to ourselves whether those people would get annoyed if they were frequently asked "why do you drive?" or "why do you eat meat?" :D
